What to visit in Colombia

If you are staying for a couple of weeks, consider exploring other Colombian cities. Many travelers split their time between Bogotá, Medellín, and Cartagena, but there are plenty of other incredible destinations to discover - like the Coffee Region - depending on your interests.

We recommend planning ahead, as December is peak travel season in Colombia - think of it as the country’s version of Ferragosto.

We kindly encourage our favorite people to dress in their finest attire for this special day. A long dress is preferred for women, and formal attire for men. Please avoid sneakers. We can’t wait to see everyone looking their best and making beautiful memories with us!

Please keep in mind that Cartagena’s weather is warm and tropical (32 Celsius / 90 Fahrenheit), so we recommend choosing light, breathable fabrics to stay comfortable while looking fabulous.

Do I need a visa to travel to Colombia?

Citizens of many countries (e.g., Canada, Italy) can enter Colombia without a visa. However, we recommend checking whether you need a visa, arrival card, or any other authorization by clicking the Visa Information Check button below.

Are any vaccines required to enter Colombia?

Currently, there are no mandatory vaccinations for entry into the country. However, Colombian authorities do require the yellow fever vaccine if you plan to visit tourist destinations such as Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park, Tayrona Park, or various Amazon reserves.

Please note that the vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before traveling to these areas. If you need the vaccine, we recommend getting it in your home country or at a vaccination point in the Bogotá or Cartagena airport.

What are my options for mobile roaming or getting a local connection in Colombia?

There are two main ways to stay connected while in Colombia. First, check with your mobile provider to see the cost of international roaming. The second option is to purchase an eSIM. Tigo is the mobile provider that tends to work best in Cartagena, but Movistar and Claro are also reliable alternatives. All three providers offer eSIM plans.

What is the currency in Colombia?

The local currency is the Colombian Peso (COP). For current exchange rates, visit: https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/.

Exchange rates as of April 15, 2025 (for reference):

• 1.00 CAD = 3,117 COP
• 1.00 USD = 4,355 COP
• 1.00 EUR = 4,909 COP

Credit cards are widely accepted - preferably Visa or Mastercard. AMEX is often not accepted.
If you prefer to use cash, ATMs are available throughout the city. Be sure to check exchange rates before you travel.

Can I use USD, CAD or EUR in Cartagena?

No. Please carry Colombian pesos, which you can withdraw from local ATMs. Most major credit cards are accepted in restaurants and bars. Notify your bank before traveling to avoid card blocks.

IMPORTANT: AMEX is not widely accepted. Visa and Mastercard are your best bet.

Can I drink the water?

Tap water is safe for brushing your teeth and showering. For drinking, it’s best to stick with bottled water or beverages. Restaurants that cater to tourists usually use purified ice, so no need to worry about ice in your drinks!

Is tipping customary in Colombia?

Yes. A 10% service charge is usually included in your bill. If the service was exceptional, feel free to leave additional pesos. Tip tour guides about 10% as well.

Any advice for tourists in Colombia?

1. Street vendors: There are many street vendors who are often pesky and insisting . If you're not good at politely saying "No" to them start practicing now. We recommend not to get too excited with items the street vendors sell you because before you know it, you will find vultures. We recommend anything you buy to be in-store to prevent unnecessary irritation.
2. Know Your Pesos: Get familiar with Colombian banknotes - don’t confuse 2,000 COP with 20,000 COP. Get familiar with your cash and organize it from small to large.
3. Convert Prices: Always convert to your home currency when making purchases. In informal settings, prices may be inflated for tourists.
4. Ask for Prices Upfront: If no prices are listed, ask before ordering or buying to avoid surprises.

What is the weather like in December?

Cartagena is a tropical city which means it is hot and humid throughout most of the year. The temperatures in December are usually highs of 30 Celsius (87 Fahrenheit) and lows of 24 Celsius (75 Fahrenheit) with a nice ocean breeze. That being said, stick to light clothing. Bring sunscreen. Stay hydrated.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

Not necessarily, but this could be a great time to put your skills to the test. Cartagena is constantly welcoming tourists from all over the world. Luckily, English is spoken all over the city.

How do I get around the city?

Cartagena is very walkable, especially within the Old City. Uber is very popular and the rates are significantly lower compared to Canada, Europe, or the United States. You can use your credit card to pay and tip the drivers. Taxis are also available throughout the city, but tips are usually given in cash.

IMPORTANT: While we recommend using Uber, if you choose to take a taxi, make sure to tell the driver your destination before getting in and ask how much they will charge.

Is there Wi-Fi in the city?

Most hotels, cafes, and restaurants offer free Wi-Fi. Just ask for the password.

Can I eat food from the street vendors in Cartagena?

Use your judgment. Stick to the busiest, most popular stalls. We recommend avoiding raw seafood like ceviche from street stands. Fried treats like empanadas and arepas de huevo are generally safe and delicious.
